Handsome Boy – Washington Park Portraits for Stylish Families

(You can always follow me on Instagram and/or Facebook, where I tend to post a bit more often.) Today, I have time to quickly post just one image from a recent family session in Washington Park. The family portraits are AMAZING, but for this first posting I decided to do it of their 8 year old boy. His big sisters and his mother are beyond beautiful – like drop dead gorgeous. And of course lovely and stylish women – they have it all! And Dad is super handsome and very nice. Oh! And super connected in all the ways it matters if you are shooting @ 6am @ Wash Park, when the city tends to water the landscaping. Speaking of, have you seen the flower beds @ Washing Park, the ones near the boathouse? They make me a Sad Panda. I know what happened is that the Spring/Summer hail decimated the flowers there. But I sure do miss the lovely flowers that usually grow there;-( Back to this kiddo –  I worry that when I post the entire family photo, the ladies’ beauty might eclipse how handsome and cute this boy is, in his own right. So his portrait goes up first. (Anyone recognize that tree trunk? It must be the most famous and photographed tree @ Washington Park.) Meet Mr Personality: (oh, I can’t wait to share his “zoolander” look in a future posting.) Well, that’s what these sessions are about!  That list on the left, above Kacey, are all the things that are important to her, or things that describe her as she is now…..You get to come up with the word list along with your child. Or, we can just use a plain blackboard background and have them hold their favorite toy/sports equipment/etc.) End up with a WOW portrait of your child to cherish forever, capturing what they are like today, at the start of the 2015-2016 school year.

Colorado Parent Magazine – Top Tips for Unique First Day Back To School Photos of your Children

Colorado Parent Magazine asked me to write an article for local Colorado parents on “Tops Tips for Unique First-Day Back to School Photos of your Kids” You can see that article and my photos in their Aug issue that came out like 5 minutes ago. 😉  (That’s the magazine world – they seem to publish about week before the actual month. I think that’s to give the postal service time to distribute the publication.) Click here, and check out page 11 to read: “8 Pro Tips for Unique First Day Back to School Photos”. One of the tips I recommend everyone check out is #6 – “Have your child hold a prized possession.”  Something that is meaningful to them at this current age and stage.  I know from the children’s portraits I create, that children love to customize a photo with their own personality and possessions. For a parent, there is nothing more unique than our child themselves so we often don’t think of including a piece of sports equipment, a stuffed animal, or a special book. But kids love to include their cherished object(s) in their photos. I take photos both with and without that object, so that you have some variety. Oh, and even if the object is so worn that it looks like the Velveteen Rabbit, be sure to include it in a few images. True story – I just did family portraits this weekend where the 2 year’s old’s favorite thing was a baby doll that had initially been the dog’s chew toy! Sure, it looked worn, but we were going to include it in a few photos anyway….until he changed his mind and wanted the bright yellow truck instead! 😉 So, even if the special object isn’t quite photogenic, it is still a good idea to include it (in at least a few photos.) Modeling Portfolio Images : Denver Models

modeling portfolio images and headshots. Mostly for models, dancers,  gymnastics and executive/business people. I have done this for years, and I’m even the official “in-house” photographer for local modeling agency Wilhelmina. It’s great fun, shooting modeling portfolio images for kids from 6 months up to 17 years old. This photo below is one of my favs from a recent portfolio session. This teen model had this great half smile, and I love love it! (I will typically shoot a full range of expressions for any type of headshot, modeling or portfolio session – serious, half smile,  big smile, and right out laughing.) The funny thing is that neither she nor her mother were aware of her great half smile  – I was the first one to capture/notice it. Here it is:

I started telling her how much I love her half smile, but she didn’t believe me. I asked her mother if she had noticed it, and she also hadn’t! That’s one of the great joys of working with a professional photographer; we always bring out something new or previously-unnoticed in my clients. Something that is totally “them”, but still new and fresh and fun.

So, since she didn’t believe or wasn’t aware of her great half smile, I had to show her the actual photo (above) on the back of my camera.

This is what she looked like just after I showed it to her. She and her mother were laughing at the new discovery.   (Yea, there was lots of laughing and fun @ our shoot. That’s pretty much how all my shoots go. I never know who has more fun – me or the people I photograph. )

Lord of the Dancer Pose (Natarajasana) Yoga Photography

Denver and Boulder are some of the greatest places for yoga! If you haven’t checked out Yoga Rocks the Park, (or “Yoga Rocks the Park Denver” as it is properly called) give it a try! It’s a blast – everyone meets @ Sunken Gardens park in Denver, you bring your yoga mat and you get to do yoga outdoor, on a Sunday morning, with hundreds of other people. A couple of tips: get there early to pick a good spot (shade if you like that, near the live musicians if you like that, near the back if that’s your thing, etc.) It’ll also give a a chance to check out the vendors that have booths there.

In past years, there was one or two free sessions. This year, many of the session are free, including the upcoming one on June 28th, 9am, courstey of Mudra YogaClick here to register  (This link won’t work once the dates have passed.)

And, once the Summer is over, all this yoga goodness goes indoor, and you can check out “Friday Night Yoga.”

I’ve got Denver yoga on my mind today because of the sweetest message I got from a yogini who recently did a custom yoga photo shoot with me:

I absolutely loved my photo shoot with Natascha Lee! She really made me feel comfortable and at ease in front of the camera. We had such a fun time doing this yoga shoot. She is so full of energy and gives great direction! She is extremely talented and her work is beautiful. I’ve really enjoyed viewing and showing off the pictures!
Thank you thank you!    –Crystal

Here a link to another of Crystal’s other images, and below are two of my favorites from her yoga shoot: this lovely headshot and one of her in Lord of the Dance Pose (Natarajasana). I love how they capture both her fun-loving and intense/reflective sides.
