What to Wear: Baby and Toddler Portrait Sessions (1st of 3) | Broomfield, Colorado Baby, Child and Family Photography by Natascha Lee Studios

I’m constantly impressed by how my clients style themselves (and their family) for their portrait sessions. For those who are not familiar with “styling” for a photography session, it involves selecting the clothes and props to use during a session. I recomend avoiding logos or letters, but beyond that, wear whatever you love and feel good in. If you pick a color for your entire family to wear, I suggest selecting one item of clothing for each person to wear, so that it’s not too matchy-matchy.

Some of my clients even do Pinterest boards as inspiration for our photo sessions. My only challenge with Pinterest is that I get sucked in, and end up spending waaaay too much time there. So, if you are a client and you would like send me your currated Pinterest board, go for it! But please don’t send it to me in the morning or my whole day will be shot! 😉

This is the first of three posts with handy-dandy guides and suggestions. I think I”m partial to this particular style guide because it matches the colors in my logo! For more suggestions, check back in a few days and/or see my previous post here.

Fresh, Easy Design Ideas (10 Ways to Tiptoe Out of Your Decorating Comfort Zone) – Broomfield, Colorado Newborn and Family Portraits by Natascha Lee Studios

Yay! Another gorgeous day in Broomfield, Colorado. I’m “stuck” in my office, editing some wonderful maternity, newborn and headshot portraits I’ve done recently. Still, it’s lovely to peek outside and see that warm sunshine. Horray Colorado!

Speaking of things I am grateful for….one of them is Houzz.com.

For those who don’t know about Houzz.com, it’s almost as addicting as Pinterest! Stunning images of interior and landscape design abound.  I can’t decide if I need to thank or curse my gardener for introducing me to the highly addictive site.

Hopefully, you will love the site and not curse me for telling you about it. Below is an excellent article from Houzz.com about how to brighten and refresh design in your house. See #3: New Artwork. A family portrait is a fabulous way to brighten and update a room, as well as a great way to celebrate the love of family.

Great Resource on What To Wear | Broomfield, Colorado Baby and Family Portraits by Natascha Lee Studios

When the weather is flirting with rain and the sky is turning gray, like it is right now in Broomfield, I crave bright colors.

Heck, as you can tell from my baby, child and family photography, I love bright colors regardless of the season or weather.

Along those same lines, I just love this color guide for portrait clothes from Lina Jarmond. (Thanks to Lina for letting me re-post it here.)

I am almost all booked for my fall sessions , and one of the first questions  people ask is, “What should I wear?”

See the nifty image below for ideas (each color palette has a Mommy, Daddy and Kiddos suggestions), and/or check out page 26 in my Summer Studio Magazine.

Watermelon, Tricycle, and a Lovely Park: Children's Creative Concept Photography Session by Broomfield Family Photographer Natascha Lee Studios

This Broomfield children’s photography session was SO MUCH FUN! I LOVE LOVE LOVE these kid’s expressions!

The idea was to tell a story; Boy rides up on his “wheels” (tricycle), shares some stories, laughs and watermelon with girl, and then they ride off together. I actually shot this twice, the first time is below and the second time was for July 4th and those images will be posted next week.

Creative concept shoots are generally portraits that tell a story, and they usually use more props that more “regular” portrait photography.

That said, I lean towards simple props, ones that just help the portraits rather than overtake them.

I want the kids, their interactions, expressions and connection to be the focus of my photographic art. Because as mothers, that’s what we most cherish and want to remember forever. Enjoy!

PS – I’m even entering these images in a photography contest of sorts. Wish me luck!
