Modeling Photos for Denver Teen Models and Denver Cheer

Modeling Photos for Denver Teen Models and Denver Cheer

Here is a recent BTS (behind the scenes) photo taken during a teen model photos session.  Mom is so cute and stylish! And she is holding the reflector for when her daughter turns around and faces the other way (not for this particular shot.)

This was a super fun session we did Sunday afternoon @ my studio.  Her daughter is into competitive cheer and is, as you can see, crazy flexible.  They brought tons of cute clothes and we had a blast picking our favorite 3 outfits for the modeling session.

If you are looking for a great gift to give your teenage daughter, give her a modeling photos session! Even if she doesn’t want to pursue modeling, it will be an amazing experience and she’ll have some fab photos to share on IG or Snapchat. Plus, you’ll have great photos that celebrate who she is today, in all her lovely teenage glory.

Many of my Denver child and teen modeling clients have not done this before, and I provide plenty of tips on how to prepare, what to bring, clothing advice, etc.

Most importantly, your teenage will feel on cloud 9 after the experience. B/c it’s always about the journey as well as the destination, right? So the actual session is a blast, and then you get photos that Wow you in the end. Win/win! 😉

BTW, this gal’s mom was super smart – she was close by, but she never made suggestions on what her daughter should do during the shoot. That’s a tip I share with parents – teenagers are their own person, and they would rather not have their parents directing them during the shoot. (That’s what I’m there for!)  Even when you are picking out clothes, bring some outfits that you like and some that they like. You’ll end up with a great mix of photos that you love, and also photos that reflect their true personality.

Denver Urban Photography Studio Tour 2- Natascha Lee Studios – Denver Baby, Kids, Family and Highschool Senior Photography

Brrr. It’s cold in Denver today. And tomorrow’s Denver forecast says a high of 2 degrees. When it’s this cold, I like to huddle inside with the dog, coffee, the fire going, and catch up on sharing some recent work. How about a little Denver Urban Photography Studio Tour?

I’ll let you in on a little secret – often, I get a question like, “I would like my model portfolio done by you. Do you have any places you shoot with red brick walls, kinda distressed?” And that will become an inspiration to do a blog posting….I can answer that photography client’s specific question with images, and then I have it available anyone in the future who asks.

Today, I’m sharing a few iphone videos taken this Fall @ one of my satellite studio locations. This isn’t far from my Denver Studio, but it’s a totally different Urban space and feel.  For one thing, it’s mostly outdoors – so not so great on sub-freezing days. But the variety of background make for fab photos. I did a senior shoot here in the fall, and the space helped us get truly unique photos to celebrate Bella, the Cherry Creek Highschool (CCHS) senior during this special time in her life.

The videos below help you get a feel for the place, and I’ve included photos taken in each of the spaces (like my other studio tour posts here and here).

First up is this great red brick barn, with sliding doors on one side and it is just flooded with natural light from the sliding doors:

We can make photos like this:

And the cool metal staircase in the corner can be used like this:

This one shows the barn and the outside:

Then there’s this great corner with lots of plants including grape vines climbing an arbor, a super cool metal table, vines climbing the walls, and yummy light:

We can do photos like this:

Finally, the part that is probably my favorite – the huge sliding doors.

And we can use those doors, and the diffused light as a background to make photos like this. I just love, love, love this image:

So that’s the tour. This space is a special place, and available as an upgrade option to your photo session!

Finally, I’ll include some photos I used in a previous post. I was going to link to them, but I might as well just include them here:

I’m so excited to share the news that I have a new shooting space option for those looking for something between the pure nature of my outdoor family and kid portrait sessions, and the indoor/urban look of my newborn, modeling portfolio and Headshots with Personality(sm). As a bit of background, I shoot family and kid portraits mostly in Broomfield/Westminster, although I also shoot in Boulder, Red  Rocks, Washington Park, etc. – anyplace that is meaningful to my clients.  The latter I shoot mostly at my N. Denver Studio – you can click here to get a full tour of my studio. I love this space!

But today I’m talking about a new option my clients have – it’s this beautiful indoor/outdoor space with a crazy array of different shooting options and spaces, all just a mile from my studio.

This place has it all. We get to close the gates, so the entire space is ours – no worrying about other people getting in the photos. It has amazing light all day. There is a heated barn with beautiful brick walls and lots of natural light. A lovey ivy-covered wall (well, except in winter ;-). Trees, a vine-covered pergola, benches, cool glass barn doors.

Denver Children’s Portraits: Indoor Studio vs Outdoors

It’s beautiful Fall in Denver! Clients often ask me where we should take their family photos:  Indoors @ my Studio, or outdoors? (Click here for a tour of my amazing studio.)

To help you out, here is a side-by-side comparison for studio vs outdoor photography for *family* photos for the top 6 Factors to consider: (BTW, for business headshots, I almost always recommend indoor, either @ my Studio or @ your place of business if the lighting there is great).

Factor #1: Weather

Indoor, of course, is stable and predictable. And if you are doing newborn infant portraits, it’s about the only way to  go (unless it’s super warm outside). You can wear whatever you want, since you don’t have to consider the temperatures. And you probably won’t have to reschedule due to weather (snow storms excepted, of course.)

Outdoors, you may have to reschedule if it’s really cold. But I have done portraits in the rain, in the snow, etc. It can add some great variety to your family portraits to have snow softly falling. The wind can make your hair look great – like a fashion model with your hair blowing around you!

Winner: Tie, since indoor is weather-neutral, but outdoor can offer great variety and even some hair-flattering wind! (Yes, I am a predominantly outdoor portrait photographer – that’s why I love the variety)

Factor #2: Light

Indoors is a bit more stable, but if it ‘s cloudy, then outside get the win. It’s lovely to photograph in cloudy weather; we call it God’s Softbox. If your kids have blue eyes, they will be more sensitive to the sun, and indoors will be easier on their eyes – so we have less squinting.

Winner: Since I am mostly a natural light photographer, and I have an amazing studio with  great light, the win for this goes to indoors.

Factor #3: Backgrounds

My studio has tons of different backgrounds inside and out (just check out this recent small business owner headshot session for an example of that), but there is nothing as beautiful as Colorado nature backgrounds. Or your own home, for that matter -whatever space is special to you and your family! I have photographed at Wash Park for a stylish urban family, in the Boulder Mountains for an outdoorsy, community-leaders family, at Red Rocks for a family that LOVES Red Rocks, at a private barn for a close-knit family and at a beautiful local pond space for a sweet active family that wanted to include their crazy dog! If a space is special to you, then we can craft your family portraits there.

Winner: Outdoors.

Factor #4: Young Kid-Friendly

Kids love being able to move, and run around.  If you have just one kid, Studio Sessions can work well, especially if you like the Urban feel. (I even do photos on the roof @ my studio – very hip and Downtown-Denver Urban vibe.)

But, if you have more than one child or a very rambunctious one, and def. if you plan to include the family dog, then outdoors is the way to go so they have plenty of space to run and move.

Winner: Outdoors

Factor #5: Teenager-Friendly

If you have a teen, you already know the answer; teenagers prefer my Studio – the huge loft-like feel, the urban outdoor spaces, etc. But since *Mom* (or Dad) is organizing and paying for the portraits, please go with what YOU want to put on your living room wall. The kiddos will be gone to college in a few years (which, BTW, is a great reason to schedule family portraits NOW), and you will be the one who gets to look at that portrait for years to come.

Winner: Indoors/Studio

Factor #6: Number of people

If you are doing more than three people, I recommend outdoors. The vast space will accommodate more people and move configurations of you and your family members.

Winner: Outdoor

There you have it, 6 key factors to consider if you aren’t sure whether to go with indoor or outdoor photos. And since “outdoors” won slightly over “indoors”, be sure to also check out this post on the best outdoor locations for family photography,

Fabulous Portraits of Lovely Local Denver Moms

Fabulous Portraits of Lovely Local Denver Moms

Quick post today of this fabulous portrait of a local Denver Mom, a lovely lady and beautiful inside and out! Oh and she has the most adorable little boy!

This was taken at a local farm and she is standing in front of what used to be a grain silo. We are waiting for the kids to come out…..It’s now a sandbox for kids with just a few inches of sand on the bottom. Let’s say you visit this farm specifically to take portraits. And you want to take these portraits outside. Well, once those kids go inside  this super cool grain silo/sandbox, about the only thing that can get them to come out are the draft horse rides! But that’s ok; the silo is open to the sky so there is great light for kid photography in there, too.

Speaking of light, I love how the sunshine creates a halo of light around her hair and how you can see the sun reflecting off the leaves behind her, too. This was a spur-of-the-moment image. We were laughing at how we can’t get the kids to come out of the grain silo, and I suddenly said, “Stop! Don’t move! That light on you is amazing.” Well, this was my third time doing portraits of her son so she knew what to expect…plus she is a bit of a photographer herself. Every time I photograph her son, I also photograph her! (So she knew to wear something cute!)
