Top Tips for Visiting the Boulder Farmer's Market – Local Produce, Bright Vibrant Colors (and a fun thing to do with your kids during Summer)

Top Tips for Visiting the Boulder Farmer’s Market:  If you are looking for a fun Saturday morning with the kiddos, or looking to try some interesting new food, or looking for super healthy local food, or even just looking to take some fun, vibrant photos – the Boulder Farmer’s Market is the place to go! Here are the Top 7 Tips you’ll want to know before you go:

It’s open on Wed afternoon and Saturday morning. Saturday is a bit busier, with more vendors. (not really a tip, so I’m not counting that one).

Tip #1: The farmer are happy to talk about their fruit and veggies, mushrooms, honey, goat cheese, etc. They’ll tell you how they make or grow it, where it comes from, etc. It’s a great educational opportunity for your kids. Even if you “homestead” and grow many of your own veggies, the Boulder Farmer’s Market is sure to have plenty of new and unique natural foods.

Tip #2: If you like sampling, bring your appetite! Many vendors provide samples.

Tip #3: If you like dogs, you’ll be in heaven. The dogs can almost (almost) outnumber the people.

Tip #4: If you want to avoid crowds and/or have an easy time finding parking, come early – like 7:30 am for the 8am start time on Saturday morning. You can walk along Boulder Creek, etc. while you wait for everything to open.

Tip #5: The first time you go, walk the entire circuit and figure out which vendors you like the most. Then be sure to visit them right away on subsequent visits; the best vendors often sell out quickly, at least of their best items.

Tip #6: Bring cash and a reusable bag with wide, padded straps, or a little rolling grocery cart or use your child’s stroller if they are still in a stroller. Your food products will be heavy, and you’ll be walking a bit. The vendors do provide plastic bags, but those can get heavy and cut into your hands.

Tip #7: If you like bright, vibrant colors, be sure to bring your camera to take photos of the amazing produce.

And, then, when you are done taking photos, you can take your yummy local Boulder food home and have a feast!

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father’s Day!

As my clients know, I’m a huge proponent of going beyond just photos of kiddos alone; I value capturing images of children with their parents, as an entire family and also individually with each parent.

When parents are hesitant to be included in the shoot, I tell them, “The photos of your children alone will be cherished for your lifetime, the photos of you with your children with be cherished for their lifetime, also.”

In honor of Father’s Day, and all the wonderful fathers I meet/know/photograph, here’s two of my favorite Daddy images:

Modeling Portfolio Images : Denver Models

modeling portfolio images and headshots. Mostly for models, dancers,  gymnastics and executive/business people. I have done this for years, and I’m even the official “in-house” photographer for local modeling agency Wilhelmina. It’s great fun, shooting modeling portfolio images for kids from 6 months up to 17 years old. This photo below is one of my favs from a recent portfolio session. This teen model had this great half smile, and I love love it! (I will typically shoot a full range of expressions for any type of headshot, modeling or portfolio session – serious, half smile,  big smile, and right out laughing.) The funny thing is that neither she nor her mother were aware of her great half smile  – I was the first one to capture/notice it. Here it is:

I started telling her how much I love her half smile, but she didn’t believe me. I asked her mother if she had noticed it, and she also hadn’t! That’s one of the great joys of working with a professional photographer; we always bring out something new or previously-unnoticed in my clients. Something that is totally “them”, but still new and fresh and fun.

So, since she didn’t believe or wasn’t aware of her great half smile, I had to show her the actual photo (above) on the back of my camera.

This is what she looked like just after I showed it to her. She and her mother were laughing at the new discovery.   (Yea, there was lots of laughing and fun @ our shoot. That’s pretty much how all my shoots go. I never know who has more fun – me or the people I photograph. )

Lord of the Dancer Pose (Natarajasana) Yoga Photography

Denver and Boulder are some of the greatest places for yoga! If you haven’t checked out Yoga Rocks the Park, (or “Yoga Rocks the Park Denver” as it is properly called) give it a try! It’s a blast – everyone meets @ Sunken Gardens park in Denver, you bring your yoga mat and you get to do yoga outdoor, on a Sunday morning, with hundreds of other people. A couple of tips: get there early to pick a good spot (shade if you like that, near the live musicians if you like that, near the back if that’s your thing, etc.) It’ll also give a a chance to check out the vendors that have booths there.

In past years, there was one or two free sessions. This year, many of the session are free, including the upcoming one on June 28th, 9am, courstey of Mudra YogaClick here to register  (This link won’t work once the dates have passed.)

And, once the Summer is over, all this yoga goodness goes indoor, and you can check out “Friday Night Yoga.”

I’ve got Denver yoga on my mind today because of the sweetest message I got from a yogini who recently did a custom yoga photo shoot with me:

I absolutely loved my photo shoot with Natascha Lee! She really made me feel comfortable and at ease in front of the camera. We had such a fun time doing this yoga shoot. She is so full of energy and gives great direction! She is extremely talented and her work is beautiful. I’ve really enjoyed viewing and showing off the pictures!
Thank you thank you!    –Crystal

Here a link to another of Crystal’s other images, and below are two of my favorites from her yoga shoot: this lovely headshot and one of her in Lord of the Dance Pose (Natarajasana). I love how they capture both her fun-loving and intense/reflective sides.

Artistic Portraits for Teen Girl and Boy Models

I’ve had some great shoots lately, lots of super fun (and photogenic) teens. Loving the warm weather so that we can shoot outside and not worry about tight, tense shoulders from cold weather. (That’s actually the first place I see kids show the cold – their shoulders tense up and start moving towards their earlobes ;-).)

The nice weather also means we can get on the roof of my North Denver photo studio. It’s fun doing photography sessions on the roof because it gives us some wonderful and unique backgrounds for artistic portraits. Truly, how many people get a huge AC unit in the background, right?

Here are a couple recent model portfolio shoots, I love how these headshots turned out. Both these teenagers have such piercing, and expressive eyes. And they were super nice kids, too. I’ll def share some of their “smiley” images in the future.
